Mulch Alternative

Mulch Alternative

Many different mulch alternatives are available and depending on the method of use they can really offer you some great benefits. A common type of mulch alternative is shredded rubber tires. This type of mulch alternative has a long lasting benefit that gives you a natural look that will never fade and does not harm the soil. Of course the added feature here is that you are using old tires that would otherwise be filling up the local landfill. It also won’t attract pests like a traditional mulch, and has an excellent ability to absorb impact making it great for walking trails and school yard areas.

Rubber mulch alternative may not be the best choice for gardens however due to a potentially high level of zinc which can affect plant growth. In these cases a more traditional mulch may be better suited. The real downside to traditional mulch is that over time it will breakdown. A bark mulch for example tends to break apart over time and cause worms and dirt to build up, even on top of a fabric lining. Traditional mulch can sometimes create fungus problems and does tend to be more difficult to care for.

Many landscapers have begun to use crushed rock as a mulch alternative. The benefit is the more finished or professional look that it offers. This is also a great choice around trees and shrubs. For heavy traffic areas, a synthetic or plastic covering may be a better alternative. Again, the rubber mulch alternative can also be a good choice in these instances.

Of the variety of mulch alternatives available, rubber mulch does have the most upsides and very few downsides. It does have the benefit of lasting a long time and maintains its natural look but sometimes in the fall, leaves can be difficult to remove from a shredded rubber mulch and it does tend to cost a little bit more on the front end. Since it holds up so well, an argument could certainly be made as to the cost benefits it provides in the long run.
